Top Causes for Air Conditioner Problems

Low Refrigerant

The refrigerant is the goop that your air conditioner uses to remove the heat and humidity from the air in your home or business. If your system develops a leak in your refrigerant lines, you can end up with not enough refrigerant to keep things cool like Fonzie.

Frozen Evaporator Coils

Your air conditioner’s evaporator coil is filled with refrigerant and is responsible for absorbing the heat from the air like a sponge. It may sound strange, but those coils need warm air circulating around them to work properly. When something goes wrong with the airflow and the coil gets too cold, a layer of ice can build up on the outside. When this happens, you will be rewarded with warm or no air coming out from your air conditioner. Congrats!

Dirty Condenser Coils

Your mother always warned you to stay away from those dirty condenser coils from down the street( not really but it does sound like something my mom would say). Your unit’s condenser coils, which is the part of the outdoor unit, that gets rid of the heat removed from the air by expelling it outside the building. The condenser coil won’t work well when it gets covered with a layer of dirt and grime. One thing that is not good is urine…seriously. Pet Urine, and I guess anyone’s or anything’s urine, will eventually destroy condenser unit by eating away the metal. So if your pet or neighbor is constantly urinating on your air conditioner coil, get them to stop it immediately.

Fan Problems

There is a fan that blows indoor air over your unit’s evaporator coils to cool the air and another that blows air over the outdoor unit’s condenser. If either of these fans isn’t working, you can end up with poor airflow. If you neglect the problem, it can lead to compressor failure, which is often the end for your dear old air conditioner.

Leaking Ducts

Ductwork that runs through walls and ceiling carries the cooled air from the air conditioner throughout your space. However, if there are holes or breaks in the ducts, you could be paying to cool the inside of your walls which, unless your a mouse, is not very efficient as well as putting a strain on your compressor.

Thermostat Problems

If your thermostat is outdated or not working correctly it could cause major issues with your equipment. and make your air conditioner work a lot harder than it needs to be.

Clogged Drains

All the moisture that your air conditioner removes from the air has to go somewhere. and it if backs up into your air conditioner that could be a major problem not to mention potential mold growth.

Legacy Heating and Air Maintenance programs address these issues. Click here for more details
