10 Tips for Being Energy-Efficient in the Summertime

When the summer heat hits, it’s tempting to blast the AC and retreat indoors. But keeping your home cool doesn’t have to mean sky-high energy bills. At Legacy Heating and Air, we believe in keeping you comfortable and efficient.

We asked our team to help us share tips for summer energy-savings. Here are 10 easy ways to save all summer long…

1. Schedule an AC Tune-Up

An annual tune-up ensures your air conditioning system runs efficiently and reliably. Even if it’s midway through the season, it’s still a good time to get your unit serviced. A clean, well-tuned unit:

  • Uses less energy
  • Cools faster
  • Helps prevent costly breakdowns
  • Maintains your warranty

Learn more about why an AC Tune-Up should be on your to-do list each year.

2. Adjust Your Thermostat Wisely

Set your thermostat to the highest comfortable temperature for the times when you’re at home. And when you’re away, raise it a few degrees. Better yet, consider a smart thermostat to automatically manage temperatures and save energy when you don’t need full cooling power.

3. Use Ceiling Fans to Circulate Air

Fans don’t lower the room temperature, but they do make it feel cooler by improving air circulation. Use them in rooms you’re occupying and turn them off when you leave to save electricity.

Pro Tip: Set your ceiling fan to spin counterclockwise in the summer and clockwise in the winter. This helps circulate cool or warm air throughout your home.

4. Seal Air Leaks

Gaps around windows, doors, and ductwork let cool air escape and hot air creep in. Sealing these leaks with weatherstripping or caulk can dramatically improve your home’s energy efficiency.

5. Replace Dirty Air Filters

A clogged air filter restricts airflow forcing your system to work harder. Replace your filters every 1-3 months during heavy use to improve performance and air quality. You may choose to change your air filter more often if:

  • Have allergies or respiratory issues
  • Pets
  • Construction in or around your home
  • Smoke indoors

6. Close Curtains or Blinds During the Day

Sunlight streaming through your windows adds unwanted heat to your home. Keep blinds or curtains closed to block out heat and reduce the need for your AC to work overtime.

7. Upgrade to Energy-Efficient Windows

If you’re planning to make home improvements, energy-efficient windows can help prevent cool air loss and reduce your HVAC workload. Look for ENERGY STAR rated options for maximum savings.

8. Cook Smarter

Ovens and stovetops add extra heat to your home. Choose outdoor grilling, slow cookers, or microwaves instead. Cooking during cooler hours, like early morning or late evening, can also reduce indoor heat buildup.

9. Use Appliances Strategically

Run dishwashers, washers, and dryers in the early morning or evening to avoid adding heat during peak daytime hours. Choose cold water when washing clothes, and air-dry when possible.

10. Consider Upgrading Your System

If your AC unit is over 10–15 years old, it may be time for an upgrade. Modern systems are far more energy efficient and could dramatically lower your energy bills while keeping your home more comfortable.
